Effective Ways to Unclog Drains Without Chemicals

Liquid chemical drain openers can heat up in the pipe and cause the pipe to crack or melt. Which may cost you more money to have it repaired.

The internal drain system will get brittle and weaker as it ages. Adding a chemical drain cleaner to a old drain system, will increase the chances of an internal pipe collapse.

Did you know that draino, liquid plumber and other sulphuric acid drain cleaners, are not safe on the pipes, which may cause your pipes to heat up melt or crack, cause internal pipe damage and pollutes the waterways, which is bad for the environment. See this link drano and liquid plumber is bad on pipes:

  1. Use a plunger to clear the blockage.
  2. Try using a straighten wire hanger to unclog the drain. Open up the P-trap and slide the wire hanger down the pipe.
  3. Boil scalding hot water and pour it down the drain.

Grease clogs are the most toughest.

Grease clogs are tough to penetrate. The only way to clean it out is through a drain snake or hydro jetting.

If not addressed, grease clogs can get worst, to the point where grease gets compressed into the pipe, like cement. Worst case scenario the pipes needs to be cut and then replaced.

  1. Elbow Pass Drain Snake with Inner core, while spinning the auger at the same time do a circular motion to open up the clog. Once you puncture the grease clog, you want to keep it open. The grease clog is like quick sand once you open it and you pull the cable out, the grease clog seals back up. Once you open the grease clog there are a couple techniques to clean it out. 1. Turn off hot water line, place a bucket under the clogged drain, detach 3/8 hot water hose from faucet, if long enough run the hot water hose into drain pipe and at the same time spin the auger to loosen the debris out. Once you puncture grease clog in the pipe you will feel no resistance in the cable. 2. Place a bucket under the open pipe and turn off the hot water line from the faucet, then un secure the hose from the faucet and rinse the drain with the hot water line or close the P-trap piping and do a hot water rinse. I prefer to use hot boiling scalding water to rinse out the grease.
  2. Preventive measures: never throw old cooking oil down the drain. Use a paper towel to wipe any grease out of the pans.
  3. Hawaii hourly rates $150. a hour plus – to unclog a drain. Do it yourself is always a cheaper alternative. If you need assistance with the Elbow pass drain snake I can assist you over the phone for free or unclog the drain for you, for a low instructional fee. (Oahu residents only)
  4. I do not recommend drain snakes without the inner core, it is known for breaking and kinking in the pipe.
  5. The 25ft / 1/4 inch inner core cable sold by Duracable is $100., for just the cable itself. $55-65.for a drain auger with inner core cable and free shipping is cheap itself.

Instructions:

You will need the following: rag or towel, heavy duty plastic bag and bucket. Please use PPE equipment: eyewear and gloves. Clear any water from the area and dump it into the toilet. For sink drains, place a bucket under the P-trap and open the P-trap piping. DO NOT USE IN A TOILET BOWL. To get the feel of operating the drain snake, I highly recomend operating the drain snake manually and when resistance is encounter in the drain, then use drill to extract the debris from the pipe.

  1. Loosen clutch pull 1-2ft of cable into the drain or till the cable stops. The drain auger will be POSITIONED 4-6 inches away from the drain.
  2. Tighten clutch and spin the auger 5-7 times clockwise, AT THE SAME TIME, PUSH THE DRAIN AUGER FORWARD, TOWARD THE DRAIN. Technique: Tighten clutch+ Spin Auger + Pushing Forward, it will allow the cable to spiral into the pipe. If operating a drill, please operate it on low and take your time.
  3. Loosen clutch knob and DO NOT OVER LOOSEN, it may come undone and fall into the drain. With the clutch knob loosen, the cable should be loose enough, to hand feed it into the drain. Repeat
instructions no. 2 &3, till you hit the blockage, about 5-15 ft of cable, once the cable hits a no forward resistance, the hair blockage has been hit. Hair blockage has no forward resistance, with grease clogs, there is no forward resistance at first, then once punctured, the auger will move forward.
To keep the grease clog open, Technique: perform a circular motion with the auger, while spinning the cable and Push the auger Forward toward the drain. Once punctured, pull the cable out, do a hot water rinse out. I prefer boiling scalding water rinse out. Grease clog, once punctured and the cable is pulled out, it can reseal itself. To keep it open and do a hot water rinse out, to completely open the clog.
  4. With a rag slowly hand pull the cable out of the drain and wipe the cable down and manually place the cable back into the drain auger.

Lots of monkey see, monkey do sellers and brand name tool manufactures on the largest ecom website, that do not have a clue about plumbing and drain unclogging. All the products sold on the largest ecom website comes from 1 manufacture in China. If I was DIY, would I purchase a snake with 4 bulbs that may go down 50ft, probably gets stuck at 5ft with the 4 bulbs. How can a seller have 4.1 stars and another seller have 3.8 star reviews coming from the same manufacture, I guess 4.1 star seller with 5000 reviews, pays for the reviews. Chinese drain snakes littered and dumped on largest e-commerce site, kinks easily with no inner core and weak steel. I wouldn’t risk putting these Chinese slinky drain snake down the pipe. Would you buy a 50ft Chinese drain snake and it is known for kinking? I sure wouldn’t. If all 50 ft of the snake got stuck in the drain, this would be a plumber’s dream repair to extract the snake and a homeowners nightmare. Over 5K-20K repair, a plumbers dream.
